A Weekend with Suzanne and Joel

Peaks Island is in Casco Bay, off the coast of Portland, ME.
Fly/Bus/Train

Fly to Portland Airport (PWM-Intl. Jet Port), take a taxi, about $12 (or the bus) to the Casco Bay Ferry terminal, then take the ferry to the island.

Vermont Transit Bus from South Station: $26 round trip. Bus drops you on Congress St.

Amtrak: Very comfy. Drops you at Congress Street. Short taxi ride to ferry.

Drive
(from the south)

  • Take 95 North through NH into ME (@$3.00 in tolls).
  • Traffic: Once you've made it to ME, you can opt to take Rt 1...it's the scenic route, but can be faster than staying on the 95/Maine Tpk.
    Maine TP Weekly Traffic Forecast
  • From 95 North in ME, take Exit 44 (formerly 6A), 295 Portland/South Portland.
  • Take Exit 7 Franklin St., take Franklin all the way, cross Commercial St straight across intersection into Ferry.
OR Take Exit 4 - Rt 1 Portland Waterfront. At the light after the bridge, follow signs for "Portland Waterfront (rightish). This will become Commercial Street. Go @ 1 mile down Commercial Street (map) through shops, etc. Watch for Casco Bay Ferry lines building on right.
  • The ferry is at the intersection of Commercial and Franklin Streets. Casco Bay Parking Garage, (207) 761-9591. $1/hr, $14/day.
  • Alternate parking: You can now park in the POT (Portland Ocean Terminal) lot where they were building the oil rigs. Directly to the left of the ferry. You'll go as if you're turning into the ferry terminal, then take the first left (it is immediate) into the parking lot. Stop at the speed bump, enter the brick building and get a tag. You pay ahead time. Just don't park in one of the reserved PDOT spots.
The next closest is Custom House Square Garage (207) 774-2748, at the corner of Fore St and Pearl, $12.00/24 hours. Go straight out of the ferry terminal, up the hill, first left onto Fore St, then first right onto Pearl St at the light - garage is on the right side of the street.
  • Approximate travel time from Boston: 2 hrs with light traffic. If you leave Friday afternoon/evening, up to 4 hours.
  • Last ferry is at 11:30 PM.
Ferry

Take the ferry to Peaks Island (@15 mins, $6.25 round trip, ferry schedule). Consider a commuter pack of 5 tickets (for price of 3 separate tix). If time permits, call and let us know what ferry you're on.
The car ferry is $70, lines are long (particularly getting OFF the island), and we'll have a car on the island, so we don't recommend bringing your car if you are leaving on Sunday.

When you arrive on Peak's, call and we'll come pick you up (it's about a mile walk).
